5 mistakes new Amazon sellers make that can get their account suspended

Updated October 31, 2026 · 7 min read

The last thing you want after months of sourcing, photos and launch ads is a message from Amazon saying your selling privileges are suspended. Many suspensions start with a small shortcut around reviews, often taken because a tool or a "guru" made it sound normal. Here are the five we see most, and the safe way to get the same result.

Mistake 1: Putting "leave us 5 stars" on the insert

It feels harmless: you're proud of your product and you ask happy buyers to say so. But asking for positive reviews is review manipulation under Amazon's rules, and an insert is printed proof sitting in thousands of boxes.

Do instead: make the insert about setup, help and registration. Let Amazon's own Request a Review button do the asking, for every order. Kartzo can press it automatically.

Mistake 2: Trading a gift, refund or discount for a review

"Send us a screenshot of your review and get a free bonus." "Review us and get 50% off your next order." Any reward connected to a review is prohibited by Amazon, and since the U.S. FTC's 2024 rule, offering incentives conditioned on a positive (or negative) review is illegal, with civil penalties for knowing violators.

Do instead: give the gift for registering the product, the same offer for every buyer, never connected to a review. See Free gift insert cards done right.

Mistake 3: Using a tool that only asks happy customers

This one catches many careful sellers because the tool does it for them. The page asks "How was your experience?", then sends 4- and 5-star buyers to Amazon's review page and routes everyone else to a support form. It's called review gating, and it is exactly what Amazon prohibits. Using a third-party tool doesn't protect you: it's your account and your listings.

Do instead: choose a tool that shows every buyer the same steps and the same neutral review invitation. Help unhappy buyers, but don't hide the invitation from them. That's how Kartzo works, by design. Read 9 questions to ask before choosing an insert tool.

Mistake 4: Sending buyers to shop somewhere else

"Buy direct on our website and save 20%." "Use code THANKS10 on our store." Amazon doesn't allow sellers to divert buyers away from Amazon to purchase. An insert full of off-Amazon discounts can be read as exactly that.

Do instead: keep inserts about the product they already bought: setup, care, warranty, support, registration. Promote your other products in your Amazon store. Kartzo pages never sell or show outside discount codes.

Mistake 5: Asking friends, family or unhappy buyers to change reviews

Reviews from friends, family, employees or anyone with a connection to your brand are against the rules, and so is pressuring a buyer to edit or remove a negative review, even politely, even with a refund.

Do instead: fix the problem and reply professionally where Amazon allows it. Use the private feedback you collect at registration to improve the product, so the next 1,000 buyers don't hit the same issue.

The bonus mistake: thinking "everyone does it"

Plenty of sellers run gated review funnels and review-for-gift inserts for months before Amazon notices. When it does, appeals are slow and stressful, and some accounts never come back. The safe path also builds something more valuable: a list of real customers you know by name.
